Hey there, I’m Ian.
As a high school ceramics teacher based in Santa Clarita, California, I spend my days surrounded by the inspiring creativity of my students. It's a privilege to have a job that allows me to foster a love for art and self-expression in young minds. However, my passion for ceramics doesn't stop at the end of the school day. In fact, it spills over into my personal life as well.
In my spare time, I enjoy getting my hands dirty in my home studio, throwing clay and experimenting with different glaze combinations and surface designs. It's a form of relaxation for me, a way to unwind after a busy day at school, and a creative outlet that allows me to express myself.
I take great care and pride in the pieces that I create. Each one is crafted with attention to detail, ensuring that it's not just a functional item but also a beautiful work of art. I've always loved the tactile nature of ceramics, the way that the raw clay feels in my hands and the way it responds to my touch. It's a medium that demands patience, skill, and a keen eye for detail, and I take pleasure in the challenge of creating something truly unique and special.
My passion for ceramics has led me to experiment with different firing methods, from traditional pit firing to modern electric kilns. I'm always looking for new techniques and approaches to expand my skills and push the boundaries of what's possible with clay.
One of the things that I love about ceramics is the way that it can bring people together. Whether it's sharing a meal with friends and family using one of my handmade plates or gifting a special piece to a loved one, ceramics has the power to create connections and bring joy to people's lives.
My work is inspired by the natural world, from the textures and patterns of leaves and flowers to the colors of the sky at sunset. I aim to capture the beauty and essence of these elements in my pieces, creating pottery that is not only functional but also evocative and meaningful.
Overall, I'm proud to say that my love for ceramics has never wavered since my college days. It's a medium that continues to challenge and inspire me, and I feel fortunate to be able to share my passion with my students and with the wider world through my handmade pieces.
